American Censorship Day

Description

It's pretty rare that I submit art that's even remotely political. However, this is a cause that's worth your attention.

Tomorrow (11/16/11), Congress will begin holding hearings for the first ever American internet censorship bill. The intent behind this bill is to curb internet piracy, but it will not do this. Instead, it will allow the government and corporations to force ISP's to block websites they believe are hosting links to pirated or copyrighted content, will criminalize thousands, if not millions, of americans by instituting a 5 year jail sentence for streaming copyrighted content, and will cause mass censorship on common websites like facebook and twitter.

Unfortunately, it is very likely that this bill will pass. This is a problem.

You can participate in the internet wide protest tomorrow by visiting www.americancensorship.org and following their instructions.

The internet is under attack, what will you do to help?

I normally don't like to rant but...

This is the dumbest, most badly thought out bill that congress has come up with. I am not even saying this to be funny. It is incredibly retarded. This is not going to only hurt our freedom of speech but it can hurt businesses as well. Any business who supports this bill is CLEARLY not thinking. How else will they advertise and sell their shit? Here's an example.

Sony: "Fan of God of War and Uncharted? Become a fan on facebook! Oh wait, you can't because facebook is censored."

Google: "Looking for resources for a college paper you are doing? Google it! Oh wait, you can't because Google was censored over a search result for other websites containing copyrighted material."

And I could go on.

What about businesses that are just starting out? A business that nobody has heard about and the only way they can advertise is by making a channel in Youtube or an account in Facebook or Twitter? Oh wait, those websites were also blocked for copyright infringement. I guess free advertising is out of the question!

What will this mean for something as harmless as fanart or karaoke? Will little eight year old Timmy go to jail because of an innocent drawing he made involving Mickey Mouse or Mario, or because he was singing one of Emenem's songs which just happened to be recorded on the background? Will they really put millions of people in jail over something as harmless as karaoke? Is that where my tax money is being used for instead of something more productive?

It's actually hypocritical as well. You hear in the media that other countries such as China are mean and unfair for censoring the internet, yet you have Congress in America trying to do the same thing.
